Copper electroculture antenna, electromagnet solenoid, 128C, 256C and 512C tuning forks, single-channel video installation with multichannel sound output system, audio amplifiers

Elegy of Resonance is an installation comprising sound devices synchronized with a video. Rather than using conventional speakers, these devices receive audio signals from the video and simultaneously translate them into tactile sonic experiences. The work explores the crisis of hybrid cultural identities in Asia, using hybrid—but sterile—flowers as metaphorical elements to invite speculation on belonging, fertility, and transformation.

Primarily, the installation examines the emotional and psychological dimensions of resonance in regions that have undergone socio-political upheavals and contemporary trauma. Infertile flowers serve as symbols of cultural identities that struggle to thrive or reproduce. Alongside this, the tuning fork is employed as a symbolic apparatus—its properties multifaceted: as an instrument of resonance that evokes collective harmony, a tool used in artificial pollination across species, and a therapeutic device in homeopathy for balancing internal energies.

The accompanying video documents the process of using a tuning fork to extract pollen—a gesture that mourns the inability of hybrid bodies, both floral and human, to sustain themselves. While addressing the vulnerability of the self, the tuning forks—each set to different frequencies—are also attuned to regulate internal energies, offering a subtle act of care for the distress inherited from historical trauma and political unrest. Each sound device incorporates floral morphological features and principles of electroculture, further entangling the notions of identity, fertility, and resonance across the human and botanical realms.

Muk6 Hak1 is the alphabetic pronunciation in Cantonese which literally translates ‘seeing darkness’.

This project investigates the ambiguousness in seeing based on the physiological perspective and further develops into an abstract form. It is an envelope of artistic research on vision, encompassing the natural relationship of two eyes, pupil dilation and constriction according to light intensity, the reflectiveness of cornea, sensitivity of vision, natural reflexes resulting in blinking. By poetic means, it takes the form of a static aesthetic in video essay format, departing from physiology which hence enfolds the obscurity, fragility and authenticity of visual memory.

It is also an intention to exemplify the relationship between the spectators and the format of moving image under high contrast of light intensity. The intimacy is layered not only from the abstract illustration on vision but also between the spectators and the perceivable visual before eyes. The repeated image will burn in the memory of spectators in the form of light and shadow, which brings up the touching feeling right on your eyes.
Air compressors, acrylic chambers, vibration isolation risers, pressure ducts, vacuum pressure gauge

Black Noise (Inhibited) investigates the perception of sound in everyday life, questioning our innate instinct beyond basic sensory. It comprises an enclosed system of air circulation between two chambers, driven by two air compressors. Such compressors are typically found in air conditioning and refrigeration systems, where they generate the white noise associated with the compression of air through pipes and ducts. Due to the high degree of confinement of the medium (air) in these vacuum chambers, it prohibits sound from transmitting, fabricating a state of black noise.

How to Incubate a Coral as fast as a Contaminated Body is an analogue system that appropriates the logic of Biorock technology—an electrolysis-based method used in Indonesian coral reef restoration. In traditional Biorock, low-voltage current is applied underwater to stimulate mineral accretion on submerged metal structures, encouraging coral growth. Here, the process is reimagined, simulated, and unsettled.

At the heart of the system lies a coral-like structure, welded from metal rebar, submerged in an aquarium of saltwater. Connected as the cathode, it is paired with a titanium mesh anode, forming a closed electrolysis circuit. The entire setup is powered by a solar panel, but the sunlight is replaced by an artificial sun: a high-wattage LED, amplified by a concave reflective antenna dish. This intensified light, nearly blinding, produces an excess of energy that must be cooled to prevent the LED from burning out. A water pump circulates the aquarium liquid through a cooling pipe affixed to the LED’s heat sink, forming a fragile metabolic loop.

This system mimics the ecological promise of coral restoration while staging its own techno-paradox: the metal branch exhales electrolysis bubbles as if breathing, yet rust bleeds into the water. The light offers life but threatens destruction. The aquarium becomes a microcosm of precarious hope—where survival depends on a fine balance of energy, toxicity, and time.

The work presents a reality on the verge of collapse. It is both a satire and a lament for environmental crisis: a system that feeds itself with artificial brilliance while drifting toward self-contamination. In mimicking restoration, it exposes the tension between healing and harm, simulation and survival.

Grounded
2025Domestic lamps intervened by fluorescent starters, electromagnetic field frequency probe, limestone sculpture, steel branches with ultrasonic transducers, timer relay, ultrasonic frequency radios and headphones

Dimensions variables
Grounded is a sculptural sound installation that explores the parallel stresses experienced by coral reefs and the human psyche under the climate crisis. Coral-like steel branches, welded from rebar and embedded in limestone, function simultaneously as sculptural forms and transmitters of ultrasonic frequencies. These frequencies, inaudible to the naked ear and accessible only through handheld radios and headphones, originate from unstable electrical currents—fluctuations that also cause the surrounding lamps to flicker erratically.

In this configuration, the installation translates the instability of electricity—its 'frustration'—into both light and sound. The branches, acting as conductors of this signal, embody an ambiguous tension between malfunction and vitality. Visitors navigate this environment by tuning into the otherwise imperceptible: a sound that resembles a healthy coral reef, yet is rooted in uncertainty. Grounded stages a paradoxical experience—one where the absence of water is saturated with electrical anxiety, and where stress, like current, accumulates quietly in the everyday.

This ambiguity is both personal and intentional. The installation does not seek resolution; instead, it offers space to acknowledge how crisis seeps into daily life, into our bodies, into the nervous flicker of the lights we live with. The soundscape becomes a personal projection—a means of transmitting inner tensions through external materials. In this sense, Grounded is as much a scenario as it is a sculpture, layered with care over crisis. Ultimately, through the vulnerability of bodies—both human and nonhuman—it asks: How conscious are we when we switch on a lamp?

Redwood reassembles old Chinese wooden chairs into a long, skeletal structure recalling a tree stabiliser for an invisible trunk. Each joint carries a tiny vibration device, quivering in response to distant VHF radio signals.

The work suggests a ghosted ecology—wood transformed, displaced, and reconfigured through invisible networks of movement. In its faint tremors, Redwood holds space for what has been taken and what continues to echo through traded materials.

Eardrum is a sound installation that transforms any audio input into a resonant, tactile experience through a percussive metal surface. At its core is a thundersheet—an industrially thin sheet of metal—onto which two vibration speakers are affixed. These transducers convert sound into tremors, turning sonic information into an embodied vibration that evokes the deep, atmospheric rumble of thunder. Sound here is not simply heard but physically felt, absorbed through the trembling surface.

In this iteration, the installation engages with two audio channels derived from video documentation recorded on the island of Gili Trawangan, Indonesia. One audio track captures the ambient sounds of a dumpsite located at the island’s center—a site of waste accumulation, decay, and neglect. The other records the underwater serenity of a coral reef restoration site along the island’s shore—a space of care, regrowth, and ecological intervention.

It acts as the shared membrane through which these two contrasting environments confront one another. The thundersheet becomes a site of collision, echoing the tension between destruction and restoration, contamination and healing. It performs a sonorous politics: the sonic confrontation embodies the contradictions of a nation whose environmental future is suspended between extractive neglect and regenerative hope.

Rather than presenting sound as a neutral medium, Eardrum amplifies its corporeality—transforming it into a trembling political surface. It resonates with the fragility of ecological systems, the violence of waste, and the pulse of human effort embedded within acts of care. In doing so, it listens with the body, vibrating at the frequency where landscape becomes symptom and the environment becomes speaker.
